1. Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Pamela Thompson and I am a wife, mother of two kids and career coach (5 years of proven success), but also as someone with over 14 years’ professional experience—on both the seeking and hiring sides—in sectors such as sales and marketing, international homeland security, engineering, legal, and oil and gas.
Over the years, I’ve combined my learning experiences from Corporate America with an undeniable passion for helping others succeed in propelling myself to become an expert career coach. I teach workshops at local schools, churches and libraries to extend the access to students and adults for career development.
2. What was your first job and how did you get it?
At the age of 25, I remember being laid off at one of the largest Oil & Gas companies in the world.
I felt hopeless, financially depleted, depressed, married, and three months pregnant with no medical. How could this have happened to me?
The only job I had qualified for without my college degree was being a receptionist (a job I could’ve gotten with a high school diploma). My husband wasn’t going to work consistently and not earning enough money to pay the bills.
We’d solely relied on my salary, benefits and insurance for the family.
We were 25 years old lost and confused left with a Mercedes Benz car, first-time homeowners, a son and another child on the way. Our income had been reduced to one paycheck.
Living paycheck to paycheck took a toll on our marriage. We couldn’t pay our bills on time. We cringed every time we would open our mail only to see a pink slip. We had no one to help us out. Shortly after giving birth to our daughter, our first-home was foreclosed, both cars were repossessed and not to mention we could no longer afford childcare for our kids.
I wasn’t frustrated. I was angry. (Yeah, you read that right!)
We couldn’t take it anymore- the stress, fighting, and blaming each other for our situation. We had separated. For months, I had blamed everyone or everything for my situation. I wish someone told me that life would be difficult sometimes. This life experience taught me how to spend my money correctly, how to stand on my own two feet and never depend on anyone to support myself.
Where were the strong women who said: “here’s how you do it?” I didn’t know what I was creating, but I knew it was bigger than me. I wasn’t the only person out there following the Corporate America dream job, who had a failed relationship, or declined sleep most nights to show my children that I, too, can find success. There had to be millions of women, like me, trying to figure this crap out.
3. How did you decide and get to your career today?
I enjoyed sharing my learning experiences from Corporate America to help others succeed. Many family and friends would often ask me to check or revamp their resume. Now, as many of you know, I’m not one to shy away from an opportunity to help lift others professionally.
My consistency for helping others led me to start PCT Consulting Solutions, a company that prides itself on helping professionals and students overcome the evolving challenges of career development and goal setting in a sustained way.
4. What advice would you have given your younger self? Or what is the best career advice you have ever received?
Never stop BELIEVING in the POWER of YOU!
5. In 5 years, where do you hope to be professionally and personally?
My family is very important to me and my success. We enjoy each other while traveling, cooking together, and singing 90’s karaoke music. I want to continue creating a lifestyle filled with treasured memories and financial freedom for us.
As a career coach, I hope to become more involved in various organizations and communities, helping to find ways to lead, engage, and inspire others to get their dream job.
